Men’s Tech Shed

overview

The Men’s Tech Shed is an innovative concept for using new technology as a catalyst for connecting with refuge men currently living in temporary accommodation.

It is being delivered in partnership with PHD Researcher Biran Byrne and Mears Housing at one of their facilities in Belfast.

What & How

The Men’s Tech Shed, is a social club with varied tech-led activities to help them residents relax, share their stories while having fun and learning to use digital arts and technology. It is also a great opportunity to practice English and learn more about local culture.

The programme was co-designed with participants, beginning with consultation exercise  which helped us get to know their needs and give them opportunities to share their thoughts and interests. This is very important to ensure that the project is built on collaboration and in line with what is of interest to the participants.

Project co-design resulted in 12 sessions using various creative activities including.

-          Virtual Reality & 360 filming

-          DJ-ing & Digital Music.

-          Photography & Filmmaking

A core group of 10 have been regularly attending since October 2022 and the project is due to finish in April 2023.

Key Outcomes

  •  Improving social inclusion in a supportive environment, without pressure

  •  Using digital arts and blended media to support their transition to the local community and culture.

  • Sharing of their stories while building digital skills in areas of interest

  • Increasing personal development and cultural competencies
